Oktoberfest anyone?

September 29, 2007

The hunt for the most perfect of ancient celebrations is on…that primal urge to douse oneself in the nectar of the gods–yes, that’s right. The debauchery fest also known as Oktoberfest is right around the corner. I have one question for you…

Seoulites–’Where will YOU be this Oktoberfest?”

My pick so far will have to be the Lotte World Hotel bar, Mega CC–they are having an all you can drink microbrew fest for only 11,000won!

Want more, just go to our calendar section, type in the keyword: oktoberfest, and let the good times roll.

If you know of another party happening around town, submit it to our calendar and let the world know.

Worldwide protests against Burma; All quiet in Korea

September 27, 2007

I hope everyone had a nice Chuseok. Seoul’s streets were relatively empty, which I fully enjoyed. In case you haven’t kept up on regional news over the holiday, there’s been a lot going on over in Burma:

Edit: Video no longer available

FYI: Korea is one of the few countries that does business with the Myanmar regime. Particularly shamefully, last December Daewoo, Doosan, and others were indicted for selling weapons to the brutal Burmese government.

My ‘to do’ list for Chuseok

September 20, 2007

I’m writing this on the Thursday afternoon before the second biggest holiday in Korea: Chuseok.

Nobody’s getting much work done as everyone’s already spaced out for the long holiday ahead. As you’ve probably gathered by now, This is the big traveling holiday when Koreans go to their home towns. Lately there’s been a growing trend for families to take vacations abroad for Chuseok, meaning even international travel is booked solid several months in advance.

All of this means that we’re looking at the single best week of the year to be a resident of Seoul. It’s peaceful, the weather is usually nice, and there is enough stuff going on to keep you from getting too bored.

I started drafting this post with the intention of gathering information on all of the stuff going on during Chuseok. Well…. that didn’t so much happen since I’ve been busy tweaking the way our calendar displays events, and if I waited much longer to make this post it would be useless.

Therefore, I decided to simply list the things that I look forward to doing this Chuseok. Feel free to add your own plans, especially if you plan on going with a group to a particular bar where people will be hanging out.

Something you DO see every day

September 19, 2007

For those of you with a lot of time on your hadnds, you can learn a ton about Korea by staying in tune with the numerous other blogs out there that are directly related to life in Korea. A seemingly unrelated stream of blog posts whipped through the Korean blogosphere the past couple days and I’m going to attempt to connect some dots between them.

Buying things from the U.S.A.

September 18, 2007

After having lived in this country for a little more than 5 years, you kinda get used to not having certain things at your fingertips–like size 13 shoes, long-sleeved shirts that fit, and tomatillo salsa.

A trip stateside soon turns into a gorge-fest of all pleasures denied. Buying clothes that fit and food to stock the shelves becomes priority numero uno during any trip, and family and friends reconfirm their fears that Korea must really be this backwards and struggling economy if my first thoughts upon landing turn to my stockpiling and hording instincts.

Living in Korea, you learn to do without…you learn to get by…and you learn to improvise.
