September 18, 2007

Pieroth Wines’ Korea branch is set to take things up a several notches with the opening of Kabinett, a boutique wine bar, in Itaewon.

Aside from being fans of Pieroth wine tasting events, we’re excited about this because of the big rooftop Halloween party they’ll be hosting with Eloquence magazine just before the official opening!

Seoul’s Top Coffee Shops

September 17, 2007

I am writing this in the hopes that people will see their favorites missing from the list, and write comments letting me know what I’m missing out on. I definately have not tried enough of the small, independent coffee shops/chains around, partly because rent prices are so ridiculously expensive that they can’t get good locations. Sidenote: although I’ve made it clear that I have no problem with Starbucks politically, I did hear something a couple months ago I found rather unfair; Starbucks doesn’t have to pay rent for its shops in Korea because every big building that goes up wants it in their building to attract companies to buy office space there.

Unfair, yes, but a good strategy on the part of developers.

Wine tasting THIS SATURDAY at Walker-Hill Hotel

September 12, 2007

Edit: Due to inclement weather, this event has been postponed until October 3rd

I thought this deserved some special attention since the Walker-Hill Hotel wine tastings are quite nice and they’re promoting it at the last minute. I would most certainly be there myself, except I’ll be spending the weekend in Jeju-do. Check it out:

One of Seoul’s Best Kept Secrets: The USO Canteen

September 11, 2007

A gem in the rough, located apx 200 meters from Samgakji (line 6) Station exit number 10, The USO Canteen has been serving up some of the best American Homestyle food for years. Click here for more directions.

Chili Dogs, Brats, Meatloaf, Burgers, Lasagna, Tacos….and much more (Check out the USO’s site for an updated calendar–if no calendar is posted, just kindly email someone and a month-long menu of Canteen specials will magically appear in your mailbox within a few days!) Here is September’s Menu.

Mouthwatering…delicious…and a touch of home! Wash it down with some of your favorite US Beverages like Mountain Dew and Snapple…They even have candy bars–when’s the last time you had a Baby Ruth or a Butterfinger?

But, before you get yourself all excited, there is a catch.  The canteen is only open Weekdays from 7am until 2pm!  Closed All Holidays–US and Korean.

Bonus information:  There is also a small shop there that stocks US magazines and they sell them at US prices–imagine getting your copy of Bon Appetit for only $2.95 vs the 11,000 won you would pay at the local Kyobo Bookstore.

Extra Bonus information: The USO does the best DMZ tour, there is a travel agency, easy chairs, US TV, newspapers, events…

Seriously…it’s one of the best kept secrets.
