Final Saturday trip to Daejon Animal Shelter

October 26, 2007

From the Daejon 150:

We will be making the usual trip down to Daejon this Saturday for people interested in adopting or fostering a dog. We have applied to the Daejon council for more time to adopt the dogs out, but if we don’t receive a favourable response this may be the last weekend trip before the dogs are sent to other shelters.

We will be taking the 9.00am KTX train from Seoul station to Daejon. We meet in the KTX ticket/departure gate area of Seoul station before 8.45am (I recommend people arrive between 8.30 and 8.45 as the train leaves at 9.00am sharp). Anyone who is not familiar with the KTX gate, when you walk up the big set of stairs at the front of Seoul station and walk inside the main area you will see an escalator immediately in front of you with a KTX sign. Take that escalator up to the mezzanine level one floor above the main area and we meet there. The train takes about an hour to get to Daejon.

We meet anyone going to Daejon from elsewhere (ie not from Seoul) at the main Daejon train station at 10.00am (at the big rock out the front of the station). There are two train stations in Daejon, we meet at the main one (which the KTX trains depart from). We then take taxis to the shelter (about 20 mins by car).

As far as adoption, transportation etc is concerned the usual process is:
- anyone considering adoption should definitely come down to the shelter to meet the dogs in person (adopting a dog is such a personal process, you always need to make your own connection with an animal);
- you can spend as much time as you like at the shelter getting to know any of the individual dogs that you wish to - taking them for walks, hanging out with them on the grass etc;
- the adoption fee is 30,000 KRW which goes to Mrs Jung the shelter manager (the lady who runs the place and pretty much pays for everything out of her own pocket);
- we will generally then take any dog in the process of adoption to the vet at the Daejon Emart (he is very kind and does a lot of work with the rescue dogs for very little cost) he will look at each dog to check their general health, give them a blood test to check for heartworm, check for ear mites etc, that normally costs about 25,000 KRW. If you don’t wish to use the Daejon vet but would prefer your own vet that is fine of course.
- if the particular dog is not up to date with its vaccinations (which some are not, as Mrs Jung just does not have the money) then it is probably a good idea to get the immunisations done (which will cost another 25,000 KRW);
- as long as the dog is in a carry cage (you can either bring one with you or the Emart vet sells them) then the dog can come back on the KTX train no problem;
- pics of some of the available dogs are on the www.lonelylifetime.com website, on the first page of the site you should see a story about the shelter which has links to a bunch of photos, let me know if you have any difficulty accessing these.

Things to bring with you:
- a dog carry cage (preferable to bring one if you can, as the cages sold at the vet are limited in number and size);
- a change of clothes & shoes (the shelter can get kinda muddy and if you wander into the main area the dogs will generally get their muddy paws on you pretty quickly)

My mobile is 010 8940 5233 if anyone needs to call me at any stage or I can be contacted at tim.vasudeva@gmail.com.

Cheers
Tim
