Big Coffee News: fresh roasted coffee at Cafe Classico
October 31, 2007
Okay so it’s no secret I’m a coffee find (EDIT: That should read “fiend” d’oh…). Saying that I’ve blogged about trying to find a decent cup of Joe in Seoul before is an understatement (just here, here, here, and here).
So yesterday I’m walking with my girlfriend to the Gangnam Hooters and she spots a little corner cafe which I’ve walked by many times before without thinking about. She says she wants to check it out, so we walk closer. That’s when I notice a little sign that says “커피 볶은집” (coffee roasting house).
Sure enough, I was able to pick up a bag of same-day roasted coffee beans to bring to the office this morning.
It was definately expensive (12,000 won for a 200gram bag of 100% Arabica Indonesian beans) but considering the stale charcoal pebbles that passes for coffee beans at Starbucks and Coffee Bean in Korea, it’s not that bad.
Even better, it’s just on the back side of the Gangnam Hooters. I previously wrote about the new Segfreddo Italian Espresso place in the same area. Indeed, the two shops are in the same building. Cafe Classico is on the side closer to Hooters.
Not the best picture, but it was snapped on the bus this morning as I was riding by on my daily commute.
This is yet another reason why I love living in Seoul, and abroad in general. It’s the adventure of finding these little gems.

Dammmn..You saving if not my life then soul for sure ^^ Going to check up this place tomorrow.
Thanks!
It’s still cheaper to buy a bag of beans - and have good coffee - than going to Holly’s by my office and spending $4 for something I can’t finish. Thanks for the tip.
Glad you guys liked it! I forgot to mention they have point cards, though it’s not particularly generous; have to by 11 bags of coffee to get one free.

Can you find out where a gal can purchase larger size clothing….like US or Canadian size 12-14….since your blog has “tips for living in Seoul”…I thought I might give you a try!
Thanks for the coffee bean info!
I’ve never had to personally deal with this particular request (and I suspect that Spicy hasn’t either), but I did a quick forums search over on Dave’s and saw some recommendations to order from Land’s End, Eddie Bauer, etc, from the US. I’m considering doing this myself in the near future and I’m told that shipping isn’t SO terrible, but we’ll see. You could also check out the Dongdaemun and Namdaemun night markets.
I’ve also had some luck shopping for myself at the higher-end department stores, especially for buying nice shoes in bigger sizes. If you can afford it, the luxury brands may have bigger sizes in stock since they’re hoping to sell to tourists as well as Koreans.
Good luck, and if you find find a better source, I hope you’ll come back and tell us about it!
About bigger size clothing
Nr is BIG BOSS in Itaewon, get out at the exit next to KFC walk past KFC towards Mcdonald on the KFC side of the road. Walk till you come to a shoe store jam packed with shoes and boots from top to bottom, quite a big store, then walk inside, there are stairs going up to the second floor inside the big shoe store, ta-da, you are in the shop that caters for any bigger size clothing, mostly woman but some men clothes as well. There is a lovely Korean lady who speaks English, who will look you up and down once, ask what you want and produce from some shelf the perfect clothes that will fit perfectly as well. And its not completely over prized, very nicely priced.
The only other place I could find is on the basement floor of the big big DOOTA building in Dongdaemun there is a long isle with lots of little shops that sell all the bigger sized clothes. They all have signs reading “100-120″ on their clothes rails, which means they cater for the bigger sizes.
I hope this info helps!
