Home Entertainment for Expats

January 6, 2008

The Metropolitician discusses the merits of purchasing an HD projector, rather than big screen TV on this lovely Sunday morning. He also chimes in his thoughts on buying a BluRay player.

I never seriously considered a projector before, but his post made me go “hmm… HMMMmmmm…”

I have a couple questions to research though:

1) Is a projector a viable option for channel surfing?

2) Is it easy to set up and hook up to cable/dvdplayer/game console/computer?

    1) Yep – a projector has all the SAME inputs as a TV. Only difference is that it’s not a TV. That’s it.

    2) Cable/DVD/games/computer – all there. (RCA or S-video jack/component or HDMI jack/component or HDMI again/monitor in, respectively.

Basically, if you wanted surround sound, you’d run it through a receiver, anyway, which would handle all the switching. But my Sanyo, for example, has two HDMI, two component, a standard RCA, and an S-Video input. So, even without a receiver, you could hook up above devices without a receiver.

To pack back home, though, you’d put your small speakers into a box, receiver and accessories into a box, and your projector into a carry-on bag with lots of clothing as padding.

That’s one way to do it, and everything you bought in Korea can go home with you.

In the meantime, you could use a standard business white screen (cheap - $100) and you’re set and watching movies, playing games, etc. on the LARGE SCALE.

Hey, thanks for the info! I’ll be seriously considering going this route.

Got something to say?
