Super Bowl!

January 25, 2008

Updated! See below
In an effort to share information on the coming Superbowl, we’d like to open up a place for people to share what they find. As of now, I only know about a few places with events. The most reliable information seems to be from Lao Ocean Girl about a yearly party that’s open to the public (HT to ZenKimchi).

[Edit: I just found this thread on ESLCafe with several bars in Itaewon rumored to have events, but nothing seems confirmed]

Now, someone asked me a couple weeks ago about watching it on tv. As far as I know, Korean TV stations will NOT be showing the game, though I can’t think of anything else that would be going on at 7am on a Monday morning that’s more important for SBS Sports to cover…

However, that doesn’t mean you’re out of options. It is rumored that some people have been using a software program called SOPcast to watch games. SOPcast is complicated to explain, but basically you need to install the program, and then you have to find your ‘feed’ seperately. Trouble is that websites posting the feeds tend to get shut down fairly quickly by NFL lawyers. I’ve heard that some people were able to watch the championship games on feeds posted by this site (apologies. I’m having trouble finding it again. As soon as I do, I will update).

I’ll either be taking the day off work to attend an early morning event, or attending one of the evening events, though I’m not sure I can stay away from the news since I’m on the Internet pretty much all day…

Update:

Here’s what we published in the Korea Herald yesterday:

Super Sunday
The big day is here. It will be happening on the morning of February 4th, but some places will show it on tape delay Monday night.

Live parties are scheduled for 8:00 a.m. at Wolfhound (02)-749-7971) and 3 Alley Pub (02)749-3336) in Itaewon, as well as Seoul’s Hooters locations (hooterskorea.co.kr), which will also re-run the event Monday evening.

Beer O’Clock in Mokdong (http://beeroclockseoul.blogspot.com/) will host an evening showing, if you can avoid the Internet all day.

The VFW in Haebongchon is having its annual Super Bowl party as well. Doors open at 6:30 a.m. With a free breakfast buffet, this one seems like it’s the place to be. More information available by calling the VFW at (02) 794-8180 and asking for John, or visiting

The game will also be shown live on SBS Sports. Coverage starts at 8am.

Actually, i think it will be on Korean tv. It was on tv last year too–and the recent conference championships were covered as well.

Only draw back is the Korean commentary and all the “OooHs” and “Ahhhhhhs” from guys who probably have never touched a football in their lives.

    Hooters party too???
