Online Forums in Korea

March 31, 2008

Forums are a powerful thing–all that content at our fingertips. Within a matter of minutes, we can gain the insights of thousands of others and form our own opinions about any given topic.  Of course you have your few looney writers that like nothing more than to hear their own voice…You have your cynics…your gossips…and then you have the people that are legitimately out there to provide information to the masses.

Korea has quite a few popular online forums. For those located outside of Seoul, have no fear–as there tend to be posters from all parts of the Korean Peninsula.  What makes a good forum–Good Categories…and Active Visitors!

Here is my list of most reliable and most relevant forums in Korea:

Dave’s ESL–what more can be said about Dave’s…it’s an institution that has provided lots of valuable information for living and working in Korea.

Galbijim–although i don’t usually head here for information…Skinny swears by it. I think it’s definately getting a lot more traffic these days and it appears to be getting quite a following.

USFK Forums–ok, i just discovered this gem a few days ago. It’s really got a lot of information that the other sites don’t have. Although it has a lot of military related info–there’s plenty of relevant info for all.

Mongdori–sporadic posts. Similar content as other sites. Good to browse through. Has a lot of potential.

EAS–although initially a good find…EAS has been sliding into obscurity in recent months. When the owner of the site makes a majority of the posts, its probably time to move on to a new forum. That said, there still is a lot of information on the site people will find valuable.

The Korea Times–with more spam posts than most forums, there tends to be a lot of posts about upcoming DJs, bands, and events in Seoul.

The Korea Herald–Once on the Korea Herald main page…look to the left sidebar and navigate yourself to the “Bulletin Board” section. Similar  forum as the Korea Times…a bit more varied and a bit more interesting.  Generally very active.

Seoul Global Center–the newly launched Seoul Global Center is gearing up a new forum which should be the one stop place for expats in Korea–Expats of all nationalities.

Expats4Korea–with a large base of well connected expats..the forums section provides lackluster results. If you don’t live in the Hannam-Dong/Itaewon area…there’s probably not a lot of information for you here.

Dead Forums

@llo’ Expat–the most recent post was at the end of 2007…Not very active if you ask me.

If you have any other forums that i’ve missed or that you really like…feel free to leave me a comment and i’ll check them out!
