Find out about beer in S.Korea

February 28, 2008

I came across a very interesting and very useful internet site in the last few months. It’s called RateBeer.  It’s a user generated information database and forum site for people to gather and critique various brews around the world and in their own regions.

RateBeer is widely recognized as the most accurate and *most-visited source for beer information. RateBeer is an independent world site for craft beer enthusiasts and is dedicated to serving the entire craft beer community through beer education, promotion and outreach.

RateBeer was founded in May 2000 by Bill Buchanan as a forum for beer lovers to come together and share their opinions of beer and breweries. Established and maintained by dedicated volunteers, RateBeer has become the premier resource for consumer-driven beer ratings, features on beer culture and industry events, weekly beer-related editorials, and an internationally recognized, semi-annual RateBeer Best competition. The community now has thousands of members from more than 60 countries who have rated tens of thousands of beers from around the world. Our mission is to provide independent, unbiased, consumer-driven information about beer and breweries and to enhance the image and worldwide appreciation of beer.

  * RateBeer is #1 among beer Web sites in total reach and verifies this and other claims with industry standard, third parties (65 per million web surfers - Apr 2004. Verified by Alexa.com*)
RateBeer also leads all other beer, wine and food Web sites by total traffic rank (12,803rd overall - Apr 2004*)
RateBeer serves the craft beer community around the world by maintaining the most accurate and comprehensive collection of information on beer.
      Beer ratings (over 1,042,000 - Jan 2007)
      Beers (over 59,000 - Jan 2007)
      Brewers (over 7,300 - Jan 2007)

Ratebeer has a page designated for S.Korea too. Check out and comment on what beer you think is the best mass produced and which is the best microbrewed beer available.

Ratebeer Korea

Herzen’s Hefe (Herzen is located in Gangnam, near the Bennigans) and AlleyKat(a canadian import available in places like RMT)  are my top picks.

Craigslist Seoul–more useful than ever.

February 27, 2008

Everyone knows about the sensation of craigslist–the no frills, no ads place for people to connect.  To sell, discuss, to trade, to barter…even hook up.

What started off as a US sensation soon began its spread across the globe.  I remember stumbling across the Korea version a few years ago.  There was literally nothing on it.  I think a few spam posts and sales leads for vitamins or some other pyramid schemes littered the various categories.

I was just there, and let me tell you…there’s actually people using it.  People are posting items for sale, houses for rent, and events to go to.  Check out the calendar–this Friday is a Fulbright Forum–History Lecture.

Not bad.

There’s even a section to list your services that you offer, whether it be English Teaching, cooking or even counseling.

Visit craigslist seoul to check it out.

Korea Local Information Center

February 26, 2008

The K-LIC is a newly launched center giving ”locals”, ”foreigners”, and “tourists” important information about the Korea that exists outside of Seoul–having been here for almost 6 years, this writer still has yet to make it as far as Busan or even Jeju! (All roads lead to Rome–why would i want to be anywhere else?)

Having stopped by the Seoul “Global” Center a few weeks ago, i decided to stop on by the K-LIC to see for myself about life outside of Seoul and if it really was just mere hype.

For those oblivious to the news, the K-LIC is located on the first floor of the Press Center Bldg–(next to the SFC, Seoul Finance Center)

Be on the lookout for a super helpful, super smart, attractive young Korean girl named Susie Park.  If you aren’t careful, she might offer you assistance–so, tread carefully, readers!  Completely knowledgable of Korea’s local areas, one has to wonder if she herself is not a country bumpkin in disguise!  Don’t be shy to ask any questions–i gurantee she will not disappoint.

As for the center, it offers a plethora of information booklets, maps, and guide books about all the various villages throughout the Korean peninsula.  However content rich, the set-backs abound for those non-hangul speakers–Enter Susie Park.  She definately will assist you in your quest for English-rich knowledge.

Birthday?  Did someone say birthday?  The K-LIC is turning 100 days old–which in Korean society is old enough to drive, drink soju, and die for your country!  Come out and celebrate with the folks at the K-LIC:

We also have a special event coming up. We are celebrating our 100th day of our opening on Feb.29 (this Friday). There will be wine tasting from 8 different regions in

Korea, as well as rice cake. The informal event (tasting) will start at 12pm and the formal opening speech (Korea Local Promotion Foundation Head Director, Seoul Global Center Alan Timblick)will start at 3pm. Anyone is welcome and I hope you don’t have other plans on Friday.

Here is the attached invitation…Hope to see you there!

Golden Tee @RMT, Itaewon

February 21, 2008

Yes, you read that right…Golden Tee and RMT all in the same heading.

After years of entertaining and frustrating people around the world, Golden Tee has finally landed in Korea.  You can now play the game you learned to love at Rocky Mountain Tavern in Itaewon.

They’ve got the new 2008 GT Unplugged version running on a really slick pedestal style cabinet on the 2nd floor–Complete with 32″ LCD Monitor. This definately is not the GT you played in your college days back home, but a much sweeter version.

Games are about the price you’d pay for a beer:

5,000 won for 18 Holes

3,000 won for 9 Holes

If anyone’s looking to play…let me know…i currently hold the Game record for the longest putt @50.7 feet  (MEX)….try and beat that!

Looks like there’s also a website in progress called called Golden Tee Korea.
