BCCK ‘Apres Ski-European Style’ Party
February 18, 2008
“As the Korean skiing season draws to a close then please join us for some European style Apres-ski, in a truly appropriate Chalet setting, naturally accompanied with a classic Alpine fondue. Obviously, for those of us who spent the winter skiing in Korea then we can swap stories of pathetic yet quite serious injuries rather than the usual tales of virgin powder, avalanches and a picnic lunch half way down the Vallee Blanche. In doing your bit for the atmosphere, and dressing the part, you may also take home a bottle of Scotland’s finest”.

ANZCCK Sundowner 2/22
February 14, 2008
Attention all those Aussies and New Zealanders living in Korea. Attention all those wishing to make business contacts with those Aussies and New Zealanders. Attention all those that fancy a good night of good conversation, good networking, good people, some pies, and great beer.
Then this is the event for you.
The ANZCCK is having it’s monthly Sundowner.
Yours truly infiltrated this highly evasive, but incredibly friendly group towards the end of last year. Disguised as a New Zealander, i tried my best to fit in. Unfortunately i was a dead give-away as my vernacular wasn’t on par with my “mates” for the evening. Talk of of business almost always deteriorated into talk of Rugby and Cricket–a foreign language to this writer.
A great event that everyone must try at least once. Or twice. Maybe even thrice.
I’ve already got my reservation for the upcoming one. C’ya there!

Quest for an F5 Visa
February 13, 2008
6 Years…six long, but short years–how time has flown by. From an E2 to an F2 to the fabled F5. A long and ardorous journey that has definately taken its toll on this writers sanity. Let’s run through the numbers:
Trips to Korean Consulate in USA=1
Visa Runs to Osaka=2
Alien Registration Cards lost=2
Pages taken up in Passport for visas/re-entry permits etc=15
Trips to MokDong Immigration Office=666
Total amount of immigration fines=750,000 won
This writer has seen it all…he even was part of an ongoing investigation into the illegal practices of a private academy. So, when i was informed of the new changes in immigration law, let’s just say that i jumped at the opportunity!
And now, the saga of the F5 unfolds…(of course, it won’t be easy…there will be many bumps in the road…a few unexpected twists, but we will persevere!)
Feb 12th, 4:00pm: Trip to Angook Immigration Dept. proved to be a major waste of time. Upon arrival, it was jam packed with people waiting for services–so many that in fact they shut down the number-giver machine. But, while standing there, bumped into a friendly canuckistani and he gave me an extra number he had. I waited for about an hour and upon looking into my bag, realized that i didn’t have my passport. This would apparently have to wait for another day.
Feb 13th, 9:00: Upon arriving, there was already a line of 20 people ahead of me! I quickly got number 23 and began to wait…and wait….and wait. 1 hour later, i get the call. I proceed to the counter and give my materials to the clerk. She looks at my immigration card and shakes her head…”You can’t use this immigration office.”
“Why,”said I.
“You have to go to your region…you live in Bangbae…which is only serviced by MokDong.”
“But,” i said, “i got my F2 here 2 years ago and there were no problems…”
“Rules have changed. Thank you. Have a nice day. Goodbye.”
Game over…foiled yet again.
And upon learning a trip to MokDong is in order, I might have to postpone my attempts for the time being. It’s far from the downtown area where i work. *Good news though–just realized that i can hop on line 5 and have a straight shot!
Stay tuned for the continuing saga…
